About Kerry Edwards

Trainer Profile

Not originating from a traditional racing background, Kerry’s progression to train thoroughbred racehorses has been the result of an overwhelming love of the horse.

As a horse mad child, horses were a “no go zone” on a productive dairy farm.  However, after much persuasion, Kerry’s much anticipated first horse arrived….pony club, gymkhanas, shows and one day events followed….all her child hood horsey dreams realized!

Upon joining the Victorian Police force Kerry’s passion for the horse drew her to secure a position at the Mounted Branch.  During her eight years as a mounted trooper Kerry’s horsemanship skills were recognized and she was given the extra responsibility of assessing and educating prospective troop horses.  Kerry’s initiation into the world of racing was incited by a fellow member at the Mounties, Glenn Hancock, a registered trainer who had worked with the legendary Colin Hayes.

Upon leaving the Police Mounted Branch Kerry commenced her own business breaking and pretraining at her then Romsey property, obtaining a trainer’s licence to allow access to the nearby Kyneton racecourse.  To supplement this small training business venture Kerry also worked part time Vet nursing.

With limited resources Kerry’s first two horses purchased to train produced five wins and numerous places between them.

The third horse purchased from the initial William Inglis Sydney “Ready to Run” sale held in 1999 provided her first city winner, Paternal.  Every small trainer's dream horse, 11 wins (9 metropolitan) from his 38 starts.  With many good horses there are often injury issues, and Paternal was no exception….long 50 minute one way drives to Altona beach to wade through ice cold salt water enabled Kerry to successfully prolong Paternal’s racing career.

Making the decision to train full time Kerry secured her current Bittern property in 2008.  The catalyst for her move was to have easier beach access for her small race team.   The combination of a relaxed country environment, beach work, with training facilities at nearby Mornington and Balnarring racecourses allows versatility for each individual horse’s needs.  Being a hand’s on trainer Kerry rides her own work providing ultimate care, consistency and confidence to each individual horse.

“No grand plans to have large numbers in my stable. I’d rather offer the discerning owner quality personalized service where their horse will not be missed amongst amidst the masses.  With a relaxed rural setting, variation of work routine and daily turn out into paddocks horses really thrive in this environment. ”
